What constitutes operational excellence? Is it merely performing tasks as effectively and efficiently as possible? This is really only one part of the equation. According to the Baldrige Excellence Framework, attributes of organizational excellence include:
Leadership
Customers
Measurement, Analysis, and Knowledge Management
Workforce
Operations
Results
This is a good list and a great start when it comes to operational excellence. The main message here is that when you begin to think about operational excellence, it must be in terms of the entire business and and how your operations can help facilitate your overall strategy and vision.
